CALIFORNIA TITLE PROCEDURES:

The person(s) named on the front of the title must follow these THREE EASY steps:

The person(s) named on the front of the title must follow these steps:

1. Sign the front of the title on line 1a where it reads "Signature of Registered Owner."
2. Sign below the odometer section of the title where it reads "Transferor/ Seller Signature(s)."
3. If there's a lien listed on the title, it must be released on the title, or accompanied by a separate lien release letter.

You'll need to sign both in the Seller Signature section, and the signature portion in the Odometer section.

*For California titles, sign line 1a only for vehicles 10 years or older. Disregard step 2.

REMEMBER:
  • If there are two owners on the title, one or both must sign depending on how the names appear in the title. Buyer line must remain blank.
  1. Owner 1 OR Owner 2 - Only ONE owner must sign
  2. Owner 1 AND/OR Owner 2 - Only ONE owner must sign
  3. Owner 1 AND Owner 2 - BOTH owners must sign
  4. Owner 1 Owner 2 (No conjunction) - BOTH owners must sign
  • The name used to sign the title must exactly match the name shown on the title. If you have changed your name since the title was issued, do not sign with your new name. Go ahead and sign with the name shown on the title.

Title Tips for a SMOOTH transaction:

  • Use black or blue pen, only. NO RED, NO GREEN and of course, NO PENCIL!!!
  • DO NOT USE white-out.
  • No strikethroughs or scribbles.
